The ancestor of our boats... All forms of canoe
polo that I was writing about further were played outdoors (lakes,
ponds, rivers). The firs wooden canoe that looks a bit similar to boats
that we use today was designed for children to teach them how to paddle
in indoor pools. It was made by Keeble of England’s National Schools
Sailing Association. Few years later Alan Byde of The British Canoe
Union build a similar kayak of glass-reinforced plastic. This cind of
material was just comming into common use for boat hulls. The design
was called BAT – “bath” or Baths Advanced Trainer. This boat gave a new
shape for canoe polo that could been played indoor by adults and as
well by children. First England national championships were held in
1971 and the sport became popular in France and Australia by the end of
dacade.
